Typography Class Word Portrait
Designed in both Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for SNHU Typography Design class, this is one of my most favorite projects. We were tasked with creating a word portrait of a fictional character. I chose one of my most favorite literary and screen characters, Elizabeth Bennett of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice". I looked at different images of the different screen adaptations, and watched many, many versions over and over again (my family was not pleased) but I settled on this image of Keira Knightly in the 2003 film adaptation. I then did research to find out what typeset was used to first print the novel in 1812, which was Caslon Pro, and decided that the modern version, Adobe Caslon Pro would be the typeface that I used, “Superior legibility, beautiful curves and lines with varied weight and tension are all trademarks of any Caslon typeface. As such, Caslon lends itself very well to books or official documents that require large amounts of reading” (Coale, 2013). I then pulled my favorite Elizabeth Bennett quotes from the book. It was a true labor of love, and I am so happy with how it turned out. Feedback received suggested that I lighten the text in areas with heavy contrast, so I lowered the opacity on all of the sections of her hair and dress and left all of her facial features at full opacity to create more interest on her face in a subtle way.
